Karur (Tamil Nadu) : Cement manufacturer, Chettinad Cement, on Feb 19 announced its plans to expand its wings in Karnataka, Maharashtra and other states within 10 years with an aim to produce 25 million tonnes of cement and to attain a turnover of Rs 5,000 crore.
Currently, the company is producing about eight million tonnes of cement per year from its existing facilities at Karrikkali, Puliyur and Ariyalur in Tamil Nadu with a turnover of Rs 3,500 crore.
"We have already procured 1,500 acres of limestone- bearing land around Kallur village, Gulbarga district in Karnataka. Initial project is to produce 2.5 million tonnes at this location", Chettinad Cement President C Sudhakar told a group of visiting journalists at their Ariyalur plant.
Stating that the total investment of Karnataka project would be about Rs 2,500 crore, he said currently the project is in a final clearance stage and the capacity is expected to be commissioned by 2012.
"During the second phase the Karnataka facility would produce additional 2.5 million tonnes cement", he said adding by 2020, the facility would be able to produce another five million tonnes.
The Karnataka facility would have high-tech machines such as 'Smidth' (fuller cooler) from Denmark, six roller vertical cement mill imported from Germany, equipment for online quality controls from the Netherlands and captive power generation units from Japan. "We have already placed order for the equipment with different companies," he said.
