The legendary rally-ruling car of the same name was launched at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show.
Four driven wheels are better than two, they say, and the German carmaker Audi seemed to have realised this fact exactly 30 years back when it unveiled its first four-wheel drive Quattro at the Geneva Motor show in 1980. What followed was some emphatic domination by cars carrying the four-rings of Ingolstadt in rallies, hill climbs and tarmac sections around the world - so much so that the Quattro system became Audi's hallmark.
While the Quattro trademark is now found on almost all road-going Audis ranging from its TT sports coupe, the monstrous Q7 SUV and the track devouring R8 sports car, Audi has chosen to mark the 30th year of the Quattro with celebrations around the world that will glorify the humble beginnings of the brand - its road and rally car named the Quattro, seen here in the picture.
The rally version of the Audi Quattro went on to win two World Rally Championship crowns and many rallies, but more importantly changed the direction of rallying towards four wheel drive forever. Here's remembering the roaring days of the legendary Quattro, and sweet memories of an era lost.
