Bajaj Auto is targeting sales of 1.25 lakh units of the Discover and over one lakh units of the Pulsar motorcycle in "the near future", according to Mr S. Sridhar, CEO (Two-Wheelers).
He added that these numbers were meant for the domestic market alone which marks a big jump from the current levels. The company has already set itself a goal of selling 1, 00, 000 units apiece of the Pulsar and Discover by end-March, which means the revised targets are meant to be achieved by the first half of 2010-11.On Tuesday, Bajaj Auto announced that it had sold 2, 32, 939 motorcycles last month (including exports), which was more than twice as much from 1,09,666 units in January 2008. The Pulsar accounted for sales of 71,970 units, while the Discover continued its good run with 92,035 units. According to Mr Sridhar, consolidation would be the company's top priority in the coming months as it sets about achieving the new aggressive goal of 2.25 lakh plus sales of the Pulsar and Discover in the local market.
"We have to work towards making more customers enjoy sports biking with the Pulsar. In the case of the Discover, there needs to be an aggressive market-oriented strategy in small towns which represent the real market for commuter bikes," he said. Mr Sridhar added that Bajaj Auto would strive to get a "significant jump in volumes" from these two brands, which have already played a big role in the company's turnaround strategy this fiscal. In the process, its market share is now 32 per cent in motorcycles, which is twice as much from last year's levels.
The Pulsar brand encompasses the 150, 180 and 220 versions with the latest 135cc promising plenty with potential sales of nearly 40,000 units a month. The Discover, on the other hand, has the 100cc and 135cc versions, as its key growth drivers though a new sibling could be on its way early next fiscal.
