Manipur Government to provide jobs to sportspersons

Imphal: The Manipur Government would offer government jobs to 109 sportspersons who have won gold medals in different national sports events.

"To encourage sportspersons and youth in the state, the Manipur Government took this decision at a Cabinet meeting presided by Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh," a government spokesman told reporters here on December 14.

Initially the government has short-listed 109 men and women, who have earned gold medals in different national level sports events.

According to the official, 40 would be provided jobs in the state youth affairs and sports department, 50 in various positions of the Manipur State Rifles (MSR) and 19 in the education department as teachers.

Manipur's boys and girls have always done well in various national and international sports meets over the years. "Despite terrorism and various other troubles, Manipur is still a 'sports powerhouse of India' and has produced several hundred international and national players in the past so many years," the spokesman said quoting the Chief Minister's comments in the cabinet meeting.
