While in 2008, it was two nominations for jazz musician Louis Banks, in 2009, Rahman has received two nominations for Slumdog Millionaire, and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has received one for his album Ancient Sounds, in the traditional world music album category. He has composed the album in collaboration with Iraqi oud soloist Rahim AlHaj.
Says Ustad Khan, "I feel happy but I still think the sarod has a long way to go, as far as international recognition is concerned. I was praying that Amaan and Ayaan get nominated, and all of a sudden I get news that I'm in the running for the Grammy!" Would he like to say something to AR Rahman? "I really wish him all the luck. He's young and is bringing Indian music unprecedented recognition. Hope he gets the Grammy." And how hopeful is he himself of winning? "The most deserving will win. Inshallah, the Grammy comes home."
Amaan Ali, Ustad Khan's son says. "Abbu has done his father, his family and his country proud!" While the news was out on the net late Thursday night, brothers Amaan and Ayaan got to know of it only the next morning. "Ayaan and I had a performance in Bangalore. We were on our way to the hotel when Ayaan said, 'Bhai, guess what happened! Abba has been nominated for the Grammy!'" said Amaan, "Abba just thanked God and wished that we'd played with him for that album." The father and sons will be off to Germany for a tour. "Well, Abbu's a quiet person. He's happy with all the messages coming in but I doubt if he'll make a big deal out of it!" said Amaan.
