Amjad Ali Khan's raga written after Indira Gandhi

On the 25th death anniversary of the former Prime Minister of India the late Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Sarod Maestro Amjad Ali Khan paid a tribute to her by dedicating an especially composed raga called the Priyadarshani raga.

In an event organised by Spic Macay "Music in the Park" 2009, a great turn out of audience from all across was seen. Music aficionados came to enjoy the music of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan in the lush green parks of Chanakyapuri, New Delhi and remember Indira Gandhi.

Giving a stellar performance the Ustad was at his usual best. Says the maestro, "It's always fulfilling to perform at such events; but today it's even more special, as I will be performing the Priyadarshani raga in the memory of the late Indira Gandhi. The way she was assassinated compelled me to compose the raga. She has graced many of my concerts, especially the one which was held during the first congress convention at Panchmarhi in Madhya Pradesh. She sat through the whole one and a half hour concert when I performed there."

Ustad Khan Saheb has recently returned from Paris, after a successful performance at the Theatre de la Ville, after a gap of more than 14 years. The maestro has been on his toes for the last two months and is performing at various places across the world.
