Mumbai: The forthcoming Krsihnarao Shankar Pandit memorial festival is going to feature two instrumental jugalbandis. The first is between guitarist Dr Kamala Shankar and sitarist Rajeev Janardan. The duo is a husband and wife team. Dr Kamala said, “We first met as musicians and played in Jabalpur and found that we could match our music and temperament very well.”
The origin of Kamala is in Tamil Nadu and who has grown up in Benaras where she learnt to play Hindustani music on the Hawaiian guitar.
Rajeev Janardan hails from Kerala, but has grown up in Jabalpur. He learnt the sitar from Bimalendu Mukherjee and has already made a name for himself. He said, “Since both are string instruments, we dont find any difficulty in making our music coherent.”
Jugalbandi has been defined as co-ordinated music-making by a pair of main performers, but like Rajeev and Kamalas attempt, the format has always been a platform for experimentation. Over the last 50 years, the jugalbandi format has caught the imagination of the audience and performers alike.
