Mumbai: India, the worlds second-largest pepper exporter, may register a 21% fall in shipments to 20,000 metric tons in the marketing year that started April 1 on higher local prices, according to a senior industry official.
Philip Kuruvilla, chairman of the All India Spices Exporters Forum said, “Unless the government introduces some subsidies, we will not reach the level achieved last year.”
The country exported 25,250 tons of pepper in 2008-09. During the April-May period, pepper exports fell 46% to 3,000 tons.
