UP govt. gives green signal to Varun Gandhi’s prosecution

The Uttar Pradesh government has on Friday formally sanctioned prosecution of BJP MP from Pilibhit, Varun Gandhi, for dispersing communal hatred through hate speeches. Now, the investigating officer (IO) of the case will submit a chargesheet in the designated court against Varun seeking trial of the case. With the prosecution having done its groundwork, the case is sure to give sleepless nights to the Varun. On Friday, Home Secretary Mahesh Gupta said that the government sanctioned Varun’s prosecution under Section 153 (A) (for spreading communal hatred) of IPC after the law department approved of the evidences gathered against him as tangible enough to put up a strong case. However, he dismissed the possibility of a trial in a fast-track court as of now. As per the law, the prosecution sanction will be communicated to the district magistrate of Pilibhit, who in turn will officially issue the sanction order to the IO, clearing the way for a proper chargesheet against Varun. Varun had allegedly made hate speeches at Barkehra village on March 8 and is also accused of inciting communal passions in Desh Nagar locality on March 7 during his campaign rallies. He also faces the charge of abetting violence leading to attack on public servants on duty on the day of his arrest. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Chandigarh has confirmed that the three electronic samples of hate speeches have Varun’s voice. With this, the responsibility of proving himself innocent now rests on Varun. The young MP had earlier refused to provide a voice sample sought by the IO while he was lodged at Etah jail after his arrest under the National Security Act (NSA). A cop investigating the case informed, “Our contention now is that the voice in the hate speech recording is Varun’s. If he says it isn’t, he will be liable to provide his voice sample. The evidence is so strong that once the voice sample matches, conviction will follow.”
