Mumbai: Musicians have paid tribute late sarod maestro, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, on July 11 at the Shanmukhananda auditorium in Chembur. A full-day concert--reminiscent of the all-day, all-night affairs of the past was held in his memory.
The programme was divided into four sessions, which started with a morning session that begins at 7.30 a.m. and features L Subramaniam (along with Ambi Subramaniam) and Anup Jalota among others. During the day, there are two sessions, which will feature Sufi musicians Kavita Seth and Qawwal Munawwar Masoom, among others.
The evening session started at 5.30 p.m, with performances by Niladri Kumar, Jayateerth Mevundi and Rashid Khan. Artists like Devaki Pandit, Rakesh Chaurasia and Shaunak Abhisheki performed in the session and recordings of the late maestro were played.
Shashi Vyas of Pancham Nishad Creatives, who along with Durga Jasraj has organised the programme, said, “All the musicians and accompanists are performing free. They have even made their own travel arrangements.”
Vyas informed that even Shanmukhananda, which would otherwise charge about Rs 4 lakh for the entire day, has cut down their rates and has said that only electricity and other such actuals be paid.
After a prolonged illness, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan passed away on June 19 at his home in Anselmo, California. The son of the revered guru, Baba Acharya Allauddin Khansahib, the sarod master put Indian classical music on the world map and also created an entirely distinctive style of sarod playing.
