The Ministry of Shipping in India is planning to award six port development projects worth over Rs 2,100 crore in the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karanataka.
This allotment is as part of its 100-day agenda programme, which was released by G K Vasan, Union Minister for Shipping on Wednesday.
The Ministry had proposed to award six projects worth Rs 3,319 crore and declaring Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep as major ports, taking the total number of major ports in the country to 14. The minister said that these projects have to be awarded under the public private partnership (PPP) model.
Among the six projects worth Rs 3,319 crore, projects worth Rs 2,183 crore are to be held in the ports of three southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. These projects include an Rs 1,407 crore container terminal with a capacity of 1.5 M twenty equivalent unit (TEUs) at Ennore Port, near Chennai.
The second project includes development of eighth berth in Tuticorin port as container terminal with a capacity of 4.7 lakh TEUs at a cost of Rs 312.23 crore.
The Ministry is also looking at commissioning of Small Ship Division of Cochin Shipyard Ltd in Kerala with an estimated cost of Rs 98.63 crore.
Second Phase of Capital Dredging of National Waterways No 3 on West Coast Canal from Kollam to Kottapuram along with Champakara and Udyogmandal Canal in Kerala will be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 89.74 crore.
A mechanised iron ore handling facility as a back up requirement to deep draft at the multipurpose Berth No 14 would be developed at Rs 277.11 crore at the New Mangalore Port in Karnataka.
The ministry also proposed to buy three Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers (TSHDs) for Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) at a cost of Rs 1,570 crore.
It is also intending to declare Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshwadeep as Major Ports after seeking Cabinet approval and planning to acquire one 400 Passenger capacity Ship for Lakshwadweep Administration and one 500 Passenger Ship for Andaman and Nicobar Administration will be pursued by the Ministry.
Vasan said, acquisition of Ships for Shipping Corporation of India would be given priority and necessary contracts would be signed with Cochin Shipyard Ltd.
There is a proposal for strengthening of Indian Maritime University. The Government had established the Central University in Chennai on November 14, 2008 with campuses at Kolkata, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam.
The proposal to set up Indian Maritime Causality Investigation Cell in the Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai, to ensure systematic improvement in accidents prevention, is under active consideration in the Ministry.
The proposal of Financial Restructuring of Hindustan Shipyards Ltd and transfer of assets of the yard to Ministry of Defence is being examined in the Ministry.
