Gandhinagar: The Narendra Modi government in Gujarat has appointed a commission to record and study migration and polarisation of religious communities in Gujarat since Independence.
Retired Gujarat HC judge Justice B.J. Sethna headed the commission. He will submit a report by January 31, 2011, as per the notification dated June 6, 2009. Given the backdrop of 2002 communal riots, rights activists are seeing the move with suspicion.
Under the notification, “There have been allegations made in the court as well as media that polarisation of population on the basis of religion is taking place in Gujarat. The government feels that such allegations and unscientific conclusions create heart burn and distance among citizens.”
The commission will suggest steps to prevent polarisation. Under the terms of reference of the commission, it will map the total area in square metres covered by people following different religions in the state as on August 15, 1947. Then it will progressively show the changes taking place every 10 years. The commission will also map area-wise proportion of people following different religions in new residential areas which have come into being only after August 15, 1947. Its primary objective will be to find out reasons of polarisation of population in terms of law and order and socio-economic development.
