Mumbai: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been prompted to cancel the Deodhar Trophy tournament for the 2009-10 season due to a packed domestic schedule.
Tour Programmes and Fixtures Committee of the Indian board has taken the decision. The committee met in Mumbai to formulate the domestic schedule and finalise venues for the India-Australia ODI series due to be played in October this year.
According to a BCCI source, “Deodhar has been dropped because of the tight schedule (for domestic cricket).”
The Deodhar Trophy is Indias premier domestic limited-overs tournament, named after Professor D.B. Deodhar. Duleep Trophy is played between the five zonal teams, which is a 50-over tournament. The board has decided to retain it for the upcoming season, it is. The inaugural Deodhar Trophy took place in 1973-74, with an aim to groom Indian cricketers for the then relatively new limited-overs game.
West Zone team was the winner last season, beating East Zone by a mammoth 218 runs in the final to take the title.
