Aloo posto is a common Bengali household prepa-ration, even though poppy seeds, which are used in making this curry, tend to make people sleepy.
Ingredients
2 potatoes, peeled and chopped in to small pieces
1 onion, sliced
1 cup khus khus (poppy seeds)
Salt as required
A pinch of sugar
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chili powder
2 green chilies
Mustard oil as required
Method
1. Soak the poppy seeds in water for half an hour.
2. Then clean it out and make paste of it (make sure its not very fine).
3. In a hot kadai add some mustard oil and fry the cut potato pieces.
4. Then add the sliced onions, salt,a pinch of sugar and saute.
5. To this add turmeric and chili powder. Cook for a few minutes.
6. Then add half a cup of water and cover the dish to cook the potatoes until they are soft and tender.
7. Add the poppy seeds paste over the potatoes and cook it over a medium flame for seven minutes.
8. Transfer this preparation in to a bowl and sprinkle it with three to four drops of mustard oil over the preparation.
9. Garnish the dish with chilies and serve with steamed rice.
