SaMaPa Vitasta Awards 2008 announced |

SaMaPa (Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts) has announced the name of the recipients of this year`s prestigious `SaMaPa Vitasta Award`. The award is being conferred upon Sitar Maestro Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan and P. Shusheela, the veteran playback singer from South India.
Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan is being awarded the `SaMaPa Vitasta Award` for his lifetime contribution in the field of Indian Classical Instrumental Music - Sitar (Mumbai) and P. Susheela is being honoured with the `SaMaPa Vitasta Award` for her lifetime contribution in the field of vocal music as a playback singer from South India (Chennai).
The award has been named `Vitasta`, the ancient name of River Jehlum, which symbolizes the cultural ethos of J&K State and `SaMaPa Vitasta Award` has been instituted to honour the legendary musicians and musicologists of India who contribute significantly in propagating and preserving the cultural heritage of our country. The honour carries cash award of Rs. 50,000 each and is the first ever National Level honour pertaining to Kashmir given specially to the musical luminaries, every year, for their unparallel contribution. In the past 3 years the award has been conferred upon Smt. Girija Devi (Vocal), Late Pt. Kishan Maharaj (Tabla), Sh. Khayyam (Music Direction), Smt. Hema Malini (Dance), Pt. Ramashrey Jha (Vocal & Musicology) and Smt. Shameem Azad (Kashmiri Folk & light music).
The award announcement was made by the internationally acclaimed Santoor maestro and composer Abhay Rustum Sopori declaring that the names were selected the award selection committee headed by Pandit Bhajan Sopori and Smt. Shameem Azad. The award will be presented on the occasion of `SaMaPa Sangeet Sammelan 2008` in Delhi at Kamani Auditorium on the 15th of November. The two day prestigious festival, presented in collaboration with Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), IFFCO and BSNL, on 15th and 16th November 2008 will feature Abhay Rustum Sopori (Santoor), Ust. Sabir Khan &Arif Khan (Tabla Duet), Rajinder Gangani & Prathibha Prahlad (Kathak and Bharatnatyam Dance Duet), Santoor Ensemble, Swar-laya Samwad based on Hindustani Gharana Gayaki - the Vocal Gharanas of India featuring Ojesh Pratap Singh (Gwalior), Imran Khan (Dilli), Sourav Nahar (Banaras) & Vishwajit Rana (Patiyala), Ust. Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan (Sitar), Pt. Rajinder Prasanna & Dr. Santosh Nahar (Shehnai and Violin Duet), Sunanda Sharma (Vocal), Pt. Tejender Narayan Majumdar (Sarod), etc. amongst others.
SaMaPa is not merely an academy but a cultural movement. SaMaPa, under the aegis of its Chairman Pt. Bhajan Sopori, Legendary Santoor Maestro and Music Composer, has become one of the most prestigious organizations of the country and has raised the level of music and culture in Jammu & Kashmir bringing it in the world music scenario. Ustad Gh. Mohd. Saznawaz gets the prestigious "SaMaPa Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah Award 2008"
SaMaPa (Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts) has announced the name of the recipient of this year`s prestigious `SaMaPa Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah Award`. The award is being conferred upon the veteran Sufiana musician of the State of Jammu and Kashmir Ustad Ghulam Mohammad Saznawaz for his lifetime dedication and contribution to the Sufiana Music.
The `SaMaPa Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah Award` has been named after the great lover and patron of Art and Culture, a legend acclaimed by the world for his dynamic personality - Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah. The award is conferred upon personalities with enormous contribution having done path breaking works in the folk culture in the filed of music, theatre, films and other performing arts, and carries a cash prize of Rs. 25,000.
The award announcement was made by the internationally acclaimed Santoor maestro and composer Abhay Rustum Sopori declaring that the name was selected by Pandit Bhajan Sopori and the award selection committee headed by Hon`ble Member Parliament Dr. Farooq Abdullah. The award will be presented on the occasion of `SaMaPa Sangeet Sammelan 2008` in Delhi at Kamani Auditorium on the 15th of November. The two day festival on 15th and 16th November 2008 will feature more than 75 performers.
