Indian television shows go Foodie

Indians are generally food lovers and relish any show on foods in their Television channel with much attention. Many Television channels have earned lots of money with these food shows.

The food related shows in earlier days used to show a chef or a housewife teaching to prepare some new recipes. But, nowadays, the trend has changed and the food shows involve exotic travels and sampling of different cuisines while discovering interesting food facts along with fun at the end.

NDTV Good Times has food shows like Highway on My Plate, Chakh Le India!, Around the World in 85 Plates, The Chef and His Better Half, Cooking isn`t Rocket Science, Italian Khana. While NDTV India airs Zaika India Ka, Times Now has The Foodie show and BBC World`s Indian Food Made Easy.

Shivani Sharma Khanna, channel head, NDTV Good Times, says, "Food is a never-ending aspect of life. People will continue to be interested in the little secrets and pleasures of food. There is bound to be a profusion of such shows. Fresh faces give a fresh feel to the show. We wanted indistinct people to highlight the idea."

According Shivani the shows are doing so well that niche channels on food may come up within a year or two.

Rocky of `Highway on My Plate` says, "Earlier, food shows were in a juvenile stage, people thought food shows should teach us how to cook, but now the mind set is opening up and food represents passion, creativity, tastes of different parts of the world and liberation." In this show, two men share their fun-filled experiences of exploration for food on the highway.

Mayur of `Highway on My Plate` added, "The whole idea of a food show has moved on. People now have more money to play with, so they want to experiment and enjoy. It`s not a simple meal at home that appeals to them, they want to eat out and travel. They live and enjoy through us, and that makes our show popular."

Indian television shows go Foodie`Italian Khana` of Ritu Dalmia takes the audiences on trips to exotic locations abroad. She says, "An average young urban Indian likes to travel. And if he cannot travel, he aspires to travel, he is curious about international food, and will definitely give it a try. So that is the reason why the show has done so well."

Apart from few shows, many do not have celebrity chefs or guests. According to Mayur, this is a healthy trend. He adds, "Our show is all about normal people telling you about places to find good food, you too can eat at the same place and enjoy the same way. There is no pretension and perceived barrier between us and our viewers."

So, the food has got a new arena in the Indian Television.
