NBA Organizing Its First-Ever Event In India Soon |

The Indian basketball enthusiasts are going to have a great opportunity to watch the legendary and popular basketball players of the world playing in their own home soil, very soon. The National Basketball Association (NBA) from the United States of America has recently decided to organize its first ever event in India, on July 3-6. The sources from the organizers have informed that a number of star players of the game of basketball from the United States and also some of the other international teams are going to participate in the tournament and the event has been named as Basketball without Borders Asia. The sources added that the tournament would be held at the American Embassy School of New Delhi.
While making the official announcement regarding the tournament, the organizers said that the popular basketball players, who are coming to take part in Basketball without Borders Asia, include Kyle Korver (Utah Jazz), Ronny Turiaf (L.A. Lakers), Pat Garrity (Orlando Magic) and Linton Johnson (Phoenix Sons). The organizers also said on Tuesday that there will be a total of 53 players from 15 countries participating in the competition. They added that the tournament is actually a part of the global basketball development and community outreach programme, being organized by the NBA and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). They said that the programme is aimed at uniting the elite young basketball players to promote the sport and also encouraging positive social change in the areas of education, health and wellness in local communities.
Commenting on the issue, the NBA Commissioner, Mr. David Stern said, "The NBA and its players are afforded a unique opportunity to use basketball as a forum and stress the values of our game to influence social change". He added, "Each Basketball without Borders camp unites a diverse group of people to initiate a global dialogue on important issues such as healthy living, education and HIV/AIDS awareness". He also informed that the NBA legends like Sam Perkins, NBA coach Don Casey and Don Newman of the San Antonio Spurs, will be joining the NBA players, as camp coaches. He said that the camp`s athletic trainer will be Gregg Farnam of the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Assistant Coach of Houston Rockets, Dean Cooper will supervise as camp director for the fourth consecutive year. He further informed that the great NBA player, Dominique Wilkins would also be visiting India for helping the growth in participation in basketball and popularity of the NBA. The Secretary General of FIBA and IOC member, Mr. Patrick Baumann added, "We are pleased to be going to India for the first time, where Basketball without Borders will be able to further a growing interest in basketball".
