The struggling Mumbai Indians team has got a sigh of relief in their fifth match of the first DLF Indian Premier League (IPL), as they got their first win of the tournament by defeating the Kolkata Knight Riders, by 7 wickets. The Mumbai Indians lost their previous four matches consecutively to different opponents and they did well to beat the Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday, thanks to some magnificent performances by Pollock, Jayasuriya and Bravo. Batting first, the Knight Riders could not get a good score, as Pollock and Jayasuriya restricted their innings to a mere 137 runs, and the Mumbai Indians achieved the target of 138 with ease by losing only 3 wickets, thanks to a wonderful unbeaten innings by Bravo.
Winning the toss, the Kolkata Knight Riders captain, Sourav Ganguly decided to bat first and got a huge jerk from the Mumbai Indians captain, Shaun Pollock in the very first over of the match. Pollock removed both Sourav and the dangerous Brendon McCullum with two wonderful deliveries in that over. It was a huge disappointment for the Knight Riders fans, as they were eager to see some spectacular shots played by their batsmen and their hope were fulfilled to some extent, by Debabrata Das, who played nicely to score 29 runs from only 20 balls. Dwayne Bravo became successful to get the wicket of dangerous Das in the 6th over and put on some more pressure on the Knight Riders.
The Kolkata Knight Riders team was struggling at 40-3 at that moment and the two Aussies, David Hussey and Rickey Ponting tried to rescue their team from the situation and to make a partnership together. They made a small partnership of 34 runs, before Hussey was undone by a Jayasuriya delivery in the 12th over. Jayasuriya gave another two big jerks to the Knight Riders in his following over, when he got Ponting run out to a miserable misunderstanding with Mohhammad Hafeez, and also removed Hafeez from the crease in the same over. That double strike was really a huge blow on the Knight Riders and their middle batsman, Laxmiratan Shukla played a very useful innings of unbeaten 40 runs from 22 balls to help his team get the total of 137 runs.
In reply to the mere total of 137 runs by their opponents, the Mumbai Indians got a good start, as Sanath Jayasuriya was looking to be in his disastrous form in the beginning. Though, they lost their first wicket of Rahane on the score of 16 runs, Jayasuriya continued his hammerings on the Knight Riders bowlers. However, he could not do so for long, as the latest Indian pace sensation Ishant Sharma fooled him with a superb delivery and got him bowled out for 18 runs. The most promising young player of the tournament and also a fruitful invention of the tournament, Ashoke Dinda then removed the Mumbai Indians batsman, Manish Pandey from the crease very shortly and reduced their score to look, 25-3. However, the two Mumbai Indians batsmen, Robin Uthappa and Dwayne Bravo then made one of the most useful and wonderful partnership of 113 runs in the tournament so far and remained unbeaten till the end to ensure their team`s victory. Bravo took the better initiative in the partnership and scored 64 runs from 53 balls and Uthappa also did well to play an innings of 37 runs from 37 balls.
