Shyam Benegal Announced The MAMI Festival

The veteran filmmaker of the Indian film industry, Shyam Benegal has officially announced the inauguration of the 10th edition of the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI) on Friday. The organisers of the festival have informed that this year`s week long festival will start on 6th March and a number of 140 films from 45 countries will be screened in some multiplexes of Mumbai during this festival. They also said that the festival is going to introduce a number of exciting new initiatives in this edition in order to celebrate a decade of excellence.

When contacted and requested to say something about the 10th edition of the MAMI, one of the top officials from the organizing committee has stated that they are going to present the Global Lifetime Achievement Award to the renowned Spanish director, Carlos Saura. The official said that Saura would receive the award for his wonderful contribution to the World Cinema. The official said that one of the trustees of MAMI, Jaya Bachchan has suggested taking another new initiative that is actually a short film competition named `Dimensions Mumbai`. While talking about the competition in details, the competition trustee, Mr. Govind Nihalani said, "Under this programme, digital films of 5 minutes duration depicting various aspects of Mumbai are being invited from people below the age of 25. The best entry will receive a cash prize of Rs. 1, 50,000/- ".

While announcing the 10th edition of the MAMI, the Chairman of MAMI, Mr. Shyam Benegal said, "The opening Gala Night will mark the screening of the Oscar nominated film Katyn. The film was premiered at the recently concluded 58th Berlin Film Festival. Also The Italian Silent Film Pinocchio (1911) will be screened with live orchestra at the festival". He further said that the other awardees in the festival include the names of Dharmendra for the Lifetime Achievement Award and the organisers will also present awards to the famous film personalities like Rishi Kapoor, Gulzar and Hitendra Ghosh in different categories.
