Monsoon currents may arrive east, north and central India

The Met state department of Uttar Pradesh informed that monsoon will remain subdued for next 2-3 days but a new system is developing in the Bay of Bengal which may provide the necessary force to push monsoon currents into the east, north and central parts of the country.

The south-west monsoon, which hit the Kerala coast before time on May 25, is stuck in southern parts of India since last ten days and is likely to revive by June 19-20.

But till then, hot and humid weather conditions will prevail in UP with possibilities of thunder showers in some parts.

The monsoon currents have covered Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal and parts of Maharashtra till now. However, since June 7, it has not moved and is lying in a subdued condition. According to Met experts, the necessary force to push monsoon further into India is missing. It will be possible only when a cyclonic circulation develops in the Bay of Bengal.

State Met director JP Gupta said, "We have spotted some activities through satellite pictures in the bay which may create a circulation required to revive monsoon."

The normal date of monsoon arrival in UP is June 15 and in Lucknow is June 18. But with the prevailing situation, the monsoon has been delayed by at least a week. Now, Met department expects monsoon to arrive in the state and in the city within June 20 to 23.

According to the Met department, delay in monsoon will not affect the rainfall pattern. However, the Kharif crop depends on the monsoon rains in India. Hence, people fear that monsoon failure would mean more hardships in coming days for the country already reeling under economic recession.

The south-west monsoon travels thousands of kilometres from its place of origin off the Madagascar coast to Somalia from where it gets deflected to India to its retreat to Tibet in September and its final dissipation in Madagascar again a journey transcending continents, cultures and different climates. The monsoon is born due to a high pressure area called the Mascarenas High. The moisture laden currents then travel northwards to the African country of Somalia from where a jet stream formed in the month of May brings monsoon from Somalia to India.
