Guwahati: Suspected National Democratic Front of Borland (NDFB) militants have gunned down a family of four from Bihar at No 1 Naharjan village, nearly 300 km north of Guwahati, in Assam`s Sonitpur district on Tuesday.
According to the sources, the attack took place after villagers denied to pay extortion money to the militants on Monday.
According to a police official, "The rebels stormed the house of Munna Pal (35), a milkman, in the wee hours and started firing from their AK-47s and other small weapons." Pal`s son, Pankaj (3), and brother, Tunna (30), died on the spot.
The official added, "The militants hacked Subhauti (30), Pal`s pregnant wife, to death. His daughter, Poona (5), and neighbour, Swani Tanti (19), are in hospital with bullet wounds. The attack created panic among 12 other Hindi-speaking families, who immediately fled the village on hearing the sounds of gunshots. A massive manhunt was launched to arrest the assailants."
The attack is in reminiscent of the 2007 massacre of over 70 north Indian settlers by Ulfa militants in upper Assam. Before declaring ceasefire in 2004, the NDFB too had killed a number of Hindi-speaking people in lower Assam.
