Gir sanctuary to be shut for visitors from June 16 for Monsoon

Gir Asiatic Lion Sanctuary in Gujarat is going to be closed for visitors from June 16 during the rainy season and re-open on October 15.

Chief Conservator of Forests M M Sharma said that every year during monsoon, the sanctuary remains closed for visitors as it is the mating season for lions.

The closure of the sanctuary makes sure that lions and other animals are not disturbed during their mating time, he added.

The decision is taken as per the Wildlife Act, 1972. Another reason for not allowing visitors during this season is that heavy rains make the forest inaccessible.

The Gir forests area spread over 1412 Sq Km and houses 359 lions as per the April 2005 census.
