Mumbai: Ford India is planning to introduce its small car on the road by 2010, reports said.
At present, about 300 prototypes of the small car are on the road for testing. The small car is likely to have a localisation of around 85 per cent from the start to production stage. The car predominantly designed for the Indian market will have petrol and diesel engine options.
Until now, Ford has invested around USD 900 million in India. This includes USD 500 million for the new engine plant, the small car project and ramping up of the vehicle assembling capacity from 0.1 million units to 0.2 million units.
Ford is planning to get a new small car for the Indian car market in early 2010. About 85% of the car parts are localised. Ford India has designed this car especially for the Indian car market and it will be available in petrol and diesel variants.
Having discussion with Michael Boneham, President and Managing Director, Ford India, he commented that the small car will share the platform with its European and Australian sibling. The company is already testing about 300 protos. The car could have a 1.2 litre petrol engine to get the excise cut and probably a 1.5 litre diesel engine.
