Mumbai-based Bombino Express Worldwide has been fined an amount of $ 40,000 for illegally importing mangoes and purple yams from India, without the compulsory treatment, according to a media report.
Bombino Express tried to smuggle the fruit products into the country last year through the Los Angeles customs declaring them as `ladies apparel`.
The firm has received a warning saying that it would face a penalty of $ 1.6 million if it violates settlement it has now reached with the California department of food and agriculture not to illegally import mangoes or other fruit products.
According to a statement issued by the California department of food and agriculture, "In July 2008, Bombino Express Worldwide imported 34 packages of Indian mangoes and yams that were labelled `ladies apparel` through Los Angeles International Airport. Airport dogs discovered the packages and prevented the produce from entering the food supply."
