Ballroom dancing may lead to healthier lifestyle

Various ballroom dances have been recognized as dancesport, the practice of such dance forms can lead to a healthier lifestyle.

According to the eminent cardiologist Dr Snehal Sanghvi, dancesport helps in toning and training heart. Sanghvi said, "Dancing involves a feel good factor, which in turn reduces stress and thus, heart-related problems. It also helps in increasing your breathing capacity and reduces blood pressure."

Ballroom dancing is far less boring than going to the gym and plodding away on a treadmill. It has also got a glamorous streak, with almost every celeb in tinseltown waltzing their way to healthy living.

Contrary to popular belief, salsa is not a ballroom dance. Ballroom dancing includes various other dances like the Cha Cha, Samba, Jive, Tango and the Paso Doble. There`s a dance for every mood. Ballroom dancing has recently been accepted as a medal sport at the Asian Games and is included in the list of sports in the Asian Games 2010, which are to be held in China. Ballroom dancing is now known as `dancesport`.

As per actor Smiley Suri, ballroom dancing not only helps to tone body but also helps in changing the mindset. She stated, "Ball-room dancing helps tone your legs and also changes your persona. It helps in releasing endorphins that keep you happy and change the way you think. It`s helped me both, physically and mentally, I`ve seen myself transform."

Physiotherapist Dr Priti Gupta and a dancesport athlete by profession, was among the first to represent India at the Indoor-Asian games last year in Macau with her partner, Shannon Benjamin. They said, "Dancing helps you feel liberated and joyful and is the best way to keep fit."

According to fitness expert Leena Mogre, ballroom dancing helps in improving core balance and overall strength and helps in tightening leg muscles and butt muscles.
