International Airport of Chandigarh to start by October 2009

The International Airport of Chandigarh is going to be launched in Mohali by October this year with the requisite infrastructure needed at the upcoming airport.

Earlier, it was planned to launch the operations by June this year. But it has to be cancelled as the proposed Joint Venture comprising representatives from Airport Authority of India, Haryana and Punjab has failed to take shape. Therefore, no international carriers have come forward with a proposal to start operations.

According to a media report, before they can start flying, international players need to apply to Directorate General Civil Aviation (DGCA) for required permission. Once that prevails, it takes two to three months to take off.

The failure of authorities in improving facilities slowed the project seemingly. Officials said that with the new terminal building yet to be completed, there`s no space for custom officials to set base.

The forthcoming international airport will not only cater to domestic and international passengers, but also provide a momentum to industry by ferrying flowers, agro products and garments in cargo planes. The project is scheduled to be completed in two phases and AAI is scheduled to bear the construction cost, with Punjab and Haryana already having paid for the land.
