Orissa government to rennovate Jagannath Temple |

The Orissa government is going to refurbish the 12th Century Jagannath Temple and its surrounding beach area that will be covered under an ambitious Rs 15 crore mega tourism circuit project.
Rabinarayan Nanda, Tourism Minister of Orissa, said, "The project will begin by March 31, 2009 and is likely to be completed by end of 2010 with the temple authorities giving a No-Objection Certificate (NOC)."
Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister, Orissa is expected to lay the foundation stone of the project next month.
Nanda informed that under the project, there will be beautification drive on the three km-long Grand Road that faces the temple. Houses and other permanent structures on both sides of the road will be painted in a uniform colour.
Nanda said, "We will choose the colour to suit the saline ambience of Puri."
Pavements will also be constructed and there will be vending zones on the Grand Road to ensure that movement of traffic is unrestricted. The project will also solve the perennial parking problem in the pilgrim city.
Nanda further stated, "Roads will be cleaned up. We will earmark three parking lots along the Grand Road. There will be special parking spots for vehicles of pilgrims. Some parking lots will also be set up along the beach. The area surrounding the Jagannath Temple and the drainage will be developed. Once the project is completed the district administration will take up regular maintenance. As part of the project a food court and an aquarium will also be set up."
Sunil Kumar Patnaik, Tourism Officer, Puri said that project envisaged illumination of the Jagannath Temple and Gundicha Temple`s parikrama area. There will be a new vending zone on the beach with small shops now doing business will be shifted and alternative arrangements will be made for them so that there is no need to evict them. A pilgrim facilitation centre will also be set up at the city`s entrance. All buses carrying pilgrims will be parked there and facilities like waiting hall and drinking water provided.
